Copy Editing

What is Copy Editing?

Copy editing is the stage most people picture grammar nerds getting excited about. But grammar is not the only thing we go over. Here is what I look for while copy editing:

  • Grammar and punctuation (obviously)
  • Character and action consistency
  • Point of view consistency
  • Verb tense consistency
  • Repetition of words or phrases (including overused words)
  • Balance of description and action
  • Cliches
  • Rhythm and flow of sentence and paragraphs
  • Awkward sentence structure
  • Word choice and wordiness
  • Consistency of character and place names

Are You Ready for Copy Editing?

You are ready for copy editing after you have worked with a developmental editor and revised your novel or story afterward. Or you've had several beta readers go through your novel or story and you revised it afterward. Your story (plot, characters, world, etc.) is the best you can make it, though the writing itself probably needs a bit of love (with the help of an extra pair of eyes).

What Will You Get From Me?

If you hire me, I will

  • set a deadline with you.
  • read through your novel or story and make edits using track changes (Microsoft Word) or suggestions (Google Docs) depending on your preference. I will also make notes, comments, and suggestions for changes as I see them (looking out for the items listed above).
  • send you a letter with any frequent edits I made so you know what your habits are and can learn something new. I used to be a writing tutor, so I think it's important to teach writing skills where I can.

Genres I Copy Edit

I can proofread Adult, YA, or MG fantasy, science fiction, contemporary, mystery/suspense, or historical and any sub-genre within these genres. I can also proofread nonfiction, articles, and blog posts. I will not edit any novel or story with an extreme amount of profanity or explicit sex scenes.

If you would like to hire me, please contact me using any of the channels here.
